TOYTAG: How Kids Create 3D Doodle Art? (3Doodler Kit Review and More)

Toytag the Educational Toy Hub

When Toytag opened their online store for us to review a product, I was initially at a lost. They had such a vast array of educational toys, board games and creative gadgets! The website was easy and fast to navigate as they had categorised the toys according to both age and genre. I was impressed at the depth of consideration shown from their selection of toys sold. It is no gimmick when they termed themselves as a store selling ‘educational games’ as they are ‘specially curated and backed by educators‘. It was interesting going through their meticulous description and the videos on ‘how to’ use or play the toy.

Nontheless, it became clear when I saw this Art toy kit that stole my heart. It was something I had been dreaming of getting as an art educator-mum!

I have not come across this product in any toy store and I was amazed by the 2D doodles transforming magically into 3Dimensional ‘drawings’ in mid air! I knew it existed when I saw it in the news few years back. And I always wondered if I could ever have such a chance to experience such art technology since then. This 3Doodler pen is better than the printing technology because it is a hands-on doodling which will develop dexterity and spatial concept for growing kids!

Why we love our 3Doodler Start Mega Pack after reading the products’ description;

  • The ONLY Child-Safe 3D Pen: Designed with no hot parts completely safe for kids aged 8+. Pen nozzle and plastic can safely be touched with no burn risks. Uses specially designed Eco-plastic that’s biodegradable & BPA-free.
  • Perfect for STEM Learning: As a tactile learning toy, the 3Doodler Start inspires creativity, design, planning, building and spatial understanding.
  • Complete 3D Pen Kit: Each box includes 3Doodler Start 3D Pen, 2 Mixed-color Packs of Eco-Plastic (48 Strands), Micro-USB Charger, Activity Guide + a ton of creative potential!
  • Easy to use – One temperature, One speed. Just turn it on, insert a strand and start Doodling in 3D. No software or technical knowledge required!
  • Wireless – The 3Doodler Start can either be used whilst plugged in, or charge it up and Doodle wirelessly, anywhere for up to one hour.

Even though it states for aged 8+, I find that my girl at 7yo was the most consistent and enthusiastic 3Doodler! I love that the filaments are bio-degradable and BPA-free, making art safe and environmental friendly.

Our Experience

You have to charge your pen before it can work. Their instruction manual is clear and easy to follow.

We started off with haywire hands, resulting in horrendous doodle bits and pieces. This was expected as we all needed time to grasp the technique of doodling with the new pen. The green silicone templates were good guides for practice. After using different types of surfaces, we realised only the activity guide booklet was suitable for doodling on. It stuck to any other surfaces stubbornly. Therefore, I just got a doodle start pad so that we can create our own designs.

a) 3Doodler Garden

As you can see from the video, initially we followed the book’s template, then we decided to try on a recycled plastic cup. Contrary to what I see in videos where the filament strand could easily rise up on mid-air, we experienced great difficulty. It required a lot of patience to wait out for the strand of doodle to dry while fixing it the position you want. After several tries, we realised it was much more efficient to doodle as a 2D on the guide before we connect the parts onto the item we wish to build on. Perhaps the other doodle pen might be better in such in the air construction? After teaching her how to attach the 2D flower stems to the cup, I left the house. To my great surprise and delight, I saw a pot of flowers grown overnight! My girl had done all by herself! Check out the video how we still managed to create the stand in the air doodle and also the NG portions where no one ever reveals their failures.

b) 3Doodler Man

This set gave the kids much to explore and occupied their free time in the holidays. E continued her next creation- a man.

By now, she is very comfortable in handling the pen, knowing when to press the button to start and stop her doodle from overflowing. The best part was the child safe temperature that she could freely dabble and touch the sticky filaments and not get burnt. The silicone templates included in this pack gave her much variation to be creative in her designs.

C) 3Doodler Flight

Lastly, mum-me gave a try. I doodled and used up all the remnants that kids did to add bulk and design to my plastic base.

Next, I did a 3D dove. It was therapeutic and amazing to see how each doodle line became materialised in such a tactile and 3Dimensional manner! I saw how this tool had potential to strengthen spatial reality, increase attention span and challenge problem solving of a 2D to 3D process. The room for creativity is endless!

As you might have noticed, most of the products are done by the females. The boys had dabbled here and there but never got down to completing a task fully since they were easily distracted by other activities. This art does require a certain amount of interest in art and patience to see an item come to fruition.

Here’s one of the creative hearts doodled by each child for mummy to update her social media profile at Growinghearts123. I love the raw texture of the doodles which reminds me that we’re all works in progress.

Lastly, after all the trials and errors, I decided to get something similar for our friends’ girls who love art making. As it is not cheap, I shared with friends to gift them. I also tried purchasing from the online store and received very prompt feedback on the inquiry I had. I realised the filaments for refill had to be compatible with the 3Doodle pen you have. I had to get ONLY the filaments labeled ‘Start’ and is eco-friendly for children. The online messaging system was a great support in my purchases. The best part about their online store is the free delivery with no minimum purchase and a 10% discount after your first purchase!
