Fresh Feast from 8 Crabs! (Review)

{Sponsored review}

Based on the 8crabs (八鲜过海) website, they are “an award winning crab delivery and seafood delivery service serving Singaporeans island-wide.” We decided to give it a try when offered the opportunity to do a review for them. We were directed to their website https://8crabs.com/ to place our order.

The website is hassle-free and easy to use. Choose the food you want, choose the serving portion and quantity, checkout, enter delivery details and payment (credit card or paypal). No log in needed, no prompting of “people who chose this, also like this…” or “would you like to add…”.

Mental note to myself when I placed the order: there is an option to choose if you need disposable utensils. Being a family who tries our best to be environmentally friendly, I chose No. Those who frequent the usual food delivery platforms know that this option is almost 99% of the time useless as the food vendors DO NOT PAY ATTENTION to this detail at all and still provide the disposable utensils even if you choose No. So I made a mental note to myself to see if 8crabs does pay attention or not. We shall see.

8crabs does not just offer just crabs only. There is a variety of seafood, meat & poultry and sides to choose from, much like your usual zi char stalls.   We ordered:

  1. Medium size award winning chili crab
  2. Medium size award winning salted egg crab
  3. Medium sweet and sour pork
  4. Medium salted fish fried rice

This is to feed a family of 6 (3A3C). We requested for a 6pm delivery on a Public Holiday eve, made payment and got a confirmation email.

Some basic info about crabs here as claimed by 8crabs:

“Crabs naturally travel about 500m every night and prefer to live alone. However, crab farmers breed many crabs in a confined space in order to be profitable. This causes the crabs to get stressed very easily in captivity as many farms cannot replicate their natural habitat. When stressed, crabs produce ammonia, which is a sign of decomposition of seafood. Most restaurants purchase farmed crabs because they are cheaper. As a result, they use highly fragrant gravies to cover up the ammonia smell.

8 Crabs is the only company in Singapore using grade AAA premium Sri Lankan sourced wild crabs. This is graded by the most experienced crab graders in the trade. This means that our crabs are meatier, tastier, bigger, and less watery. To ensure freshness, these crabs are caught, flown, prepared and delivered to you within 12 hours. Our award-winning chefs prepare and cook these fresh crabs daily to guarantee the best flavour and taste.

We also have a ‘one driver to an order’ policy across our 12 kitchens island-wide so that we may uphold our promise of One Hour Crab Delivery.”

On the day of delivery, I got a call from a friendly uncle driver at 5.35pm informing me that the food is being collected and will be on its way, which it did promptly at 6pm (one tick). The food is still warm and importantly, THERE IS NO DISPOSABLE UTENSILS! (Double ticks) They also gave us a set of 5 deep fried mantou to go with the chili crab gravy as well. (Triple ticks!)

Our kids are self-proclaimed fried rice experts. They got started on the salted fish fried rice and immediately exclaimed, “BEST FRIED RICE EVER”. The wok hei is strong and the salted fish is not that salty. The rice did not become lumpy despite being in the box for about an hour and the amount of tau gey (bean sprouts) is just nice.

The sweet and sour pork did not survive the delivery though. It was a bit soggy but the taste was still preserved in the meat. We are big fans of this dish and this will rank as a forgettable dish on our list. We should have gone for the signature coffee pork ribs.

Then came the star of tonight’s meal. We got started on the chili crab gravy with the mantou first. Balanced is the word to describe it. The gravy is not so thick nor watery. I actually drank it like soup and still don’t feel too bloated. The spiciness level is just nice enough for medium level chili lovers, but yet not that spicy to make people down it with water. Even my daughter who can only take very mild level of chili is able to enjoy it with the mantou.

Next, my son requested that he wants to eat the crab on his own, which is a first. One of the reasons why we seldom eat crabs is because my wife and eldest son is allergic to shell food, so I ended up eating the most and also doing most of the work deshelling them for the kids. So it was a relief when my son wanted to do it himself. He had little to do…. The shell came off easily.

Crabs are well-cooked to perfection and most of the shells can be removed easily. As claimed by 8crabs, the crabs are fresh and there is no seafood stench which is a testament of the excellent culinary skills too. The flesh is tender and sweet. Even the flesh in the hard-to-reach thin fins could be sucked out with little effort. My eldest son could not resist having a bite despite having mild skin allergy towards shell food.

We were overwhelmed by the chili crab flavor that we did not fully enjoy the salted egg crabs. Kids could not taste much of the salted egg which is in no fault of the dish. Those who followed the salted egg craze over the recent years know that some dishes are simply overwhelmed by the salted egg flavoring. This salted egg crabs is not one of them. The gravy is slightly thick but did not overpower the crabs nor make one feel ‘salted egg sick’ after that. It is simply overwhelmed by the outstanding chili crab dish.

Finally, I savored the soft eggy tissue in the crab shell but by then, all of us are very full. I offered the other shell to my helper which she happily accepted.

In conclusion, all of us enjoyed this meal. I thought I ordered too little for all of us but in the end, our tummies are filled and we went to bed happy. The portions were sufficient and the food is savory enough to satisfy us all.

Score:

Website (9/10) –   informative and easy to use. But the menu can be simplified to have easy access.

Delivery (10/10) – received a call beforehand and food was delivered right on the dot, even on a PH eve.

Quality of food (9/10) – I will order again just for the crabs and this time, I will order only one dish of crabs just to enjoy the crab dish by itself

Price (7.5) – not the cheapest in the market, but for the quality and freshness of the crabs, this is worth it, especially if you want to have freshly cooked to perfection crabs delivered to your doorstep.

Overall = 9/10
